In the past, I've always set up AD using the same internal name as our
external name (company.com) and just used split DNS. I've recently set
up a new domain at this company with the intent of migrating off the old
win2k based AD manually as it's a total mess. I have AD set up, along
with Exchange server on another machine (A VM really), SQL server on a
third and a 4th with nothing yet. All running Win2K8 x64.

I've been asked to rename our internal domain to something like
internal.company.com instead of company.com. Can I just create the
subdomain and migrate the other servers to that and never use the root
domain? Or is there another way to do all this than to have to go
through the whole AD rename process? Thanks!

You can do it either way, but if your current domain is messed up, as you;ve
indicated, then I would choose to migrate to a new domain completely
separate, such as domain.net or domain.local. I kind of like the
'domain.net' for the private name with a public name of domain.com. This way
you purchase both the .net and the .com version. This also helps when
purchasing an Exchange 2007 SAN/UCC cert (which is a whole other topic).

A domain rename process is not for the faint of heart. Especially since you
have Exchange. Don't do it.

If I understand you correctly,, you have a W2k domain (old...messed up) and
have now created a new W2003 domain (new domain entirely), yes? Have you
actually migrated to that?

Hello robr,

If the domain is messed up as you state, then i agree with Ace to built a
complete new forest/domain with an internal name like domain.loc and migrate
everything to it.

Depending on the Exchange version you have different ways to move them to
the new forest. Think the same is for SQL backup and restore to another forest.
But this requires additional infos about your used exchange and sql versions.

Best regards
