I have a single forest single domain Windows Server 2003 EE Active Directory
environment. At my main site I have 3 DC's. One of the three is stuck in loop
where it constantly reboots when it either reaches the splash screen, after
loading computer or personal settings, or after login. This DC holds the
Infrastructure Master role as well as secondary DNS and WINS. I don't believe
it's a hardware problem so I need to remove it from the domain and reinstall
the server...Could I boot and do a Directory Services restore? Also need to
restore local Administrator and/or Directory Services restore password. HELP!

You can try the following:
- try to fix the problem that's causing the reboot (you should probably
disable automatic restart following system failure and examine the memory
dump to determine the cause)
- restore the failing DC from backup
- reinstall the server, clean up Active Directory metadata
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555846/en-us and
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=216498), and seize the Infrastructure
Master role...

How would I disable automatic restart? F8 at Startup?

Do you see an error on the blue screen? Try to write it down. It will look
like:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Windows_XP_BSOD.png

We need the part that says:
*** STOP: 0x000000. etc....
*** somedriver.sys - etc

Reboots can be caused by a number of things. Viruses, LSA errors, or
hardware errors.

Do you have a bootable AV cd you can use to scan the system?

You can always simply shut it down, seize the FSMO roles, run Metadata Cleanup (htpp://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498), and reinstall it and re-promote it.

No BSOD. It just gets to a certain point (Windows splash screen, applying
personal settings, or after login to domain) and then reboots. I do have a
bad drive on the mirror set for which a replacement is due tomorrow morning
but I don't think that is going to solve my problem.

Hello obnetadmin,

Reboot loop can be virus/spyware etc. also. Try with a BartPE or similar
to scane the harddisk for them. If you still stuck in the loop and it is
not the broken harddisk you can also seize the FSMO roles on another DC and
run a metadata cleanup according to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555846/en-us

It's a checkbox in Control Panel-Settings-System-Tab "advanced".

I don't think it's the drive, unless something else went wrong where the system lost or got a necessary file corrupted. If an AV scan reveals no viruses, then I would simply trash the box, clean up AD, and rebuild it.

I have all FSMO roles seized to another DC with the exception of the
Infrastructure Master. Can I seize this role to a GC server for the time
being without any issues while I perform metadata cleanup?

Hello obnetadmin,

In a single forest domain the IM can be held also from a GC DC, make all
DCs GC in your case, no problem.

Meinolf-

I now have all the roles seized to one of the other DC's at my main site.
Can I shutdown the troubled DC and start to run metadata? I also have a
backup of the System State from earlier this week before the problem started.

Also..is there any way to recover the local Administrator password on that
DC? To build the BartPE disk, does it need to be run against a Windows server?

Hello obnetadmin,

Without having the option to start the server normally, i think no. Or are
you able to logon to safe mode?

Hello obnetadmin,

If you are sure that no need for the old DC is anymore you can start to cleanup.
Make sure to take all steps and check the other DCs with support tools dcdiag
/v, netdiag /v and repadmin /showrepl to make sure no errors exist.

Best regards

Hello obnetadmin,

At least the ADRM password is needed, so i think not possible because you
can not change it remote during the loop.

Best regards

I guess at this point I should disconnect DC from the network and start
metadata cleanup? Or should I leave it connected. This DC was also secondary
DNS/WINS box. At what point would I restore my System State from backup?

Hello obnetadmin,

You have seized the FSMO to another server, do NOT bring back the old server
to the domain, also not from backup, then you result in having multiple FSMO.

Disconnect the old machine, run cleanup in the domain and make a fresh install
of the DC as additional DC in the domain. If needed use a BartPe for example
to save data from the old DCs harddisk.

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

No need to worry about the secondary DNS/WINS stuff? I suppose not. Thanks
for all your assistance with this.

Hello obnetadmin,

I assume that on the other DC at least one DNS WINS exist?

Hello obnetadmin,

Then you have no problems, just make sure no machines are configured to use
them.

Best regards

Meinolf-

That is correct. One of the other two DC's at this site (which also now
holds FSMO roles) is AD-Integrated primary DNS/WINS.

Hello obnetadmin,

Should be, make sure no machines use the old DNS WINS of course.

If there is another WINS server, and it was a replication partner with this server, go to the other WINS server and remove the replication partnership.

I would consider:

- seizing the remaining FSMOs to another DC
- do a metadata cleanup
- clean up AD & DNS
- rebuild the server
- add to the domain
- DCPROMO it
- move any FSMOs back to it.

Still battling this server...should I also remove ALL references to the
orphan DC in DHCP scopes (i.e. DNS, DHCP)? I have removed the WINS
replication partnership as suggesed in Ace Fekey's post. I just want to be
certain everything is in line prior to starting metadata cleanup.
