We have users on an existing Windows 2003 Domain, the company would like to
move users to a new 2008 Domain (new AD as they want to change the domain
name) What is the best way to go about this?

ADMT is the solution. If Exchange is involved, it's a bit more complicated.

For 2008 (run ADMT 3.1 on the 2008 side):

If Exchange is involved:

If Exchange 2003 is involved, you can use the Exmerge tool.

If Exchange 2007 is involved, you would need to use the MoveMailbox method from the source org to the target org after migrating user accounts.

I second Ace's suggestions. ADMT is the way to go. If there's project
bugdet left, you might also want to look into the Quest Migration tools
- they're somewhat easier to use. Nonetheless, ADMT is free and works fine.

Hello Florian and Ace,

Thanks for the comments. How abt introducing windows 2008
server as ADC, tranfering the roles from windows 2003 to 2008 and then
renaming the windows 2008 domain.

I know its bit lenghty procedure. Please comment how far its good.

Thanks

Hello tom,

ADMT as already mentioned will do it. So if you use Exchange please post
the version you have. For the new domain name i would not choose the same
name as for external, if you have one.

Best regards

Hello Syed,

Depending on your forest setup you have this limitations with renaming:

In a Windows Server 2003 forest, you cannot:
Change which domain is the forest root domain. Changing the DNS or the
NetBIOS name of the forest root domain, or both, is supported.
Drop domains from the forest or add domains to the forest. The number of
domains in the forest before and after the rename/restructure operation must
remain the same.
Rename a domain with the same name that another domain gave up in a single
forest restructure operation.

And as you said the procedure is not that easy, all DCs have to be rebooted
multiple times. ADMT will run parallel and the users are effected a bit less
then using domain rename.

Best regards

I agree with the others on ADMT just make sure to use the latest release
ADMT v 3.1. Previous versions do not support Windows 2008.
