Hello,

is it possible to browse all the domains and delegated subdomains from
the Start, Network by using the Windows Network browser. I can connect
to the domain joint pcs from the run by specifying their pc names but I
cannot see them from the network browser. Netbios setting is left to
default and I am using a DNS server on a Win 2008 DC which is working
file since when I paused the dns server I could not connect to the pcs
even from the run command.

Any idea why I cannot browse from the network, thank you

Hi:

IIRC, browsing via My Network Places is accomplished through NetBIOS/WINS.
If your PCs are on different subnets and you do not have a WINS server, you
will only see the PCs in your local subnet. Browsing works with Start -->
Run --> \\servername because that uses DNS. By default, Windows 2000+ uses
DNS first for name resolution, so since you have DNS, the client resolves
the server name via DNS. That's also why you can't connect to the server
when DNS is paused.

Starting with Windows 2000 and AD, MS started to move away from
NetBIOS/WINS, so you're supposed to browse for computers via AD. I got my
MCSE in NT 4.0, so that's why I'm familiar with NetBIOS/WINS. If you started
in IT with Windows 2000+, you probably didn't deal too much with
NetBIOS/WINS.

Hello aconti,

At least you have to enable NetBios over TCP/IP, but over subnets and domains
you need WINS.

Best regards

other computers on the same network by enabling Netbios over tcp/ip on
all pcs or netbios and network discovery are the same thing and have to
be enabled both of them at the same time ?
