Can I perform the additon of a 2008 r2 domain controller in a couple of steps
without impacting our current domain?

I would like to do the schema updates first and let them finish before
adding the new controller the follwoing day.

Hello 2010,

You have to wait for replication of each from the adprep /forestprep, adprep
/domainprep and adprep /rodcprep. Depending on your forest/domain setup the
replication can take some time.

In a single forest domain with a small amount of sites shouldn't be that
amount of time, default replication between sites is 180 minutes.

Best regards

But I can do these on the current domain a day or two prior to adding the new
domain controller without affecting current AD. Correct? I understand their
may be some performance issues.

Hello 2010,

There is no time limit to run it before adding a 2008 DC. The changes are
done and that's it.

Best regards

Hi
You may want to have a look at (Although is used the R2 core version, you
can still use the same procedures for full installs):
