I am planning the design of a new 2008 domain infrastructure. I will migrate
my exisiting domain to it (24 DC’s, 2500 users). I will have one dedicated
forest root and one global domain (4 DC’s to start with). I am considering
virtualizing some or all of the DC’s. My question to you is do you recommend
virtualizing win 2008 Domain Controllers with Hyper V?
I have been reading pro’s and con’s to virtualizing DC’s. What do you
experts recommend?

Hi
There's no specific recommendation without knowing your environment. If you
already read documentation regarding to this type of solution, I', sure that
you already know the basic considerations and possible issues that you may
encounter. Gather all info and analize it carefully before decide if you
should or not to virtualize your DCs.

Jorge is right - recommendations are hard if we don't know the
environment. There are common mistakes made like having all DCs
virtualized and have the VM hosts joined to the domain which results in
a henn-egg-problem. Other pretty common problems I've seen were around
backup and recovery strategies where people think it'd be cool to just
snapshot a DC or Exchange server.

Make sure you backup your VMs correctly and have a restore plan. That
might be suggesting the obvious but VMs need to be backuped and restored
as physical machines are.

One last advice on VM security. Make sure you have them (and the VM
host) secured as you would physical servers. Only because you deal with
VMs doesn't mean Joe Average should be able to access the VHD files and
copy them off the network.

Cheers,
Florian

Depends on many things as the others have suggested. As things stand at the
moment I prefer to have at least one physical DC with nothing to do with
virtual infrastructure. You can then add virtual DCs to share the load. But
if there is a problem with the virtual environment your domain will at least
not go offline.

In your post you also say you will have a dedicated forest root domain.
Microsoft is moving away from this recommendation. The dubious benefits of a
dedicated root do not outweigh the extra support and cost of maintaining
another domain.

Hello JR,

In addition to the others have a look here also:
http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/sanderberkouwer/archive/2008/ 08/13/active-directory-in-hyper-v-environments-part-1.aspx

http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/sanderberkouwer/archive/2008/ 08/14/active-directory-in-hyper-v-environments-part-2.aspx

http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/sanderberkouwer/archive/2008/ 08/16/active-directory-in-hyper-v-environments-part-3.aspx

And one of the biggest problems you can run into, is to use snapshots from
the VMs instead of a correct backup with AD aware backup software.

Best regards
