Hello

I am trying to deploy Microsoft Office 07 to some
users/computers. I have created the GPO and applied it to the OU. I have
set up the software installation settings on both the computer and user
settings and specified the msi file. However after applying gpupdate and
also restarting the software is not assign/publish itself. I am getting
this error in event viewer on the server...

Software Installation was unable to read the MSI file
C:\Software\Office 2007\Office64.en-us\Office64MUI.msi. The following
error was encountered: SQL query syntax invalid or unsupported.

Event ID 107

Aconti,

You have to use a UNC, not a direct local path, otherwise the client machine
will be looking for "C:\Software\Office
2007\Office64.en-us\Office64MUI.msi," but it doesn't exist on the client
side. Setup a folder on the server, share it out, and use a UNC path
(\\server\officesharename) in the GPO.

Hello aconti,

Ace is correct, you have to use UNC path for th .msi not c:\........................

Also see this one for some known problems with Office 2007, because there
was some changes with Office 2007 for deployment:
------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------
Office 2007 has issues when deploying with Software Installation. I still
don't get why those Office folks broke the whole Group Policy functionality.

A general guideline of a fellow-MVP Mark in this newsgroup was:

"- Do not configure the config.xml
- create a MSP file by setup /admin, save in .\Updates
- created a GPO and define a Computer Startup Script
e.g. \\yournameof.dom\netlogon\Office2007deploy.bat
- Content Office2007deploy.bat:
\\starship\clients\Office2007Ent\setup.exe"
------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------

Now I have created Application categories and have organized the
software under the relevant application category but I cannot see the
created categories when I log in on a Vista machine. Can you tell me if
the categories should appear in the Programs and Features section ?

The GPO is applied correctly to the user that is logging on the Vista
machine as when I assign or publish software they appear after gpupdate
but I still cannot see the created Categories.

Thank you

IIRC, Categories only appear for published, not assigned software.
Categories give the users the ability to pick and choose what software they
want, and choose to install it. Assigning software is forcing it on a
machine no matter who logs on.
