Is it OK to alter the pre-windows 2000 login name after it was created?

We use server 2003 and a mix of 2000/XP clients but now have an application
that needs to use the pre-windows 2000 login name.

When each user has been set up, they have been created as "John Doe" then
Windows creates the pre 2000 login the same.

Can I just alter the pre-2000 login to "John.Doe" to make the new app happy?

I can't see how this would have a detremental impact elsewhere, am I setting
myself up for a fall?!?

You can change the "pre-Windows 2000" logon name with no problem. The only
caution is that the value must be unique in the domain. It should be 20
characters or less and none of the following characters are allowed:

" \ / [ ] : ; | = , + * ? < >
