Hi,
I've been asked to look into migrating 2 servers (win 2003 , and win
2000) each with seperate active directory domains and exchange onto a
single new win 2008 server. I have never been involved in a similar
project.

Although the companies and seperate domains on each of these servers
are closely related they would like to keep the 2 domains seperate
entities on the new server. So that they don't share folders/data/
users.

Should it be possible to create 2 new child domains under a shared
forest on the new server and then migrate (using the admt tool) each
of these domains to the child domains? One of the domains only has a
few users so I can even create a new domain for them and just manually
migrate the mailboxes and data for this domain.
Or am I going down the wrong track?

Would this be the best way of organising this?

thanks,
Dave

You can't 'share' a domain or a server have dual domain membership. What
might work is to create an external two way trust between the domains.

Yes that should be fine since it is a single Forest.

But from a political perspective it is a really really really bad idea. The
two companies should have their own DC with their own Forest/Domain. Not
only for common sense pratical and political reasons,...but maybe even for
legal reasons,..particularly if the Sarbanes-Oxley Acts comes into play.

Hello davidb,

For the migration part you can use ADMT to migrate them under one forest.
BUT as kj stated you can not run 2 domains on ONE physical machine, except
you will complete virtualize them and then also make sure that the network
builtup is properly done.

Sorry, I was thinking about the Forest rather than the Domains. There can
only be one Domain per each DC,..but multiple Domains can be in one Forest.

I had a blonde moment.
