I cannot seem to be able to join some machines to the domain when using the
netbios domain name

but when I use .com domain name it works

why is that?

Netbios is a thing of the past. NT4 domains were based on it. Active
Directory Domains are built around DNS,...so the full DNS name is the
"natural" way for it to work.

You may have to run a WINS Server to join with the Nebios Name Identifier.

Is netbios enabled on the local computers nic/tcpip properties? Are you
working in a single subnet?
