Event ID 205 - Unable to add licenses to W2K3 server [message #163950] Wed, 10 June 2009 11:10 Go to next message

I had recently added a number of client licenses to a PDC, but over the last
few days was receiving errors in the event log stating that the server was
out of licenses. The licensing app showed 0 licenses! So, following the
guidelines in KB153140, I tried to reset the information. At the point of
adding the licenses back, I got an error stating I did not have enough
privileges to add the licenses (what, the domain admin not good enough?).
This was logged to the event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: LicenseService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 205
Date: 6/10/2009
Time: 9:59:52 AM
User: N/A
Computer: AS400DC1
Description:
The purchased license data could not be saved to CPL.CFG. The data is the
error code.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 05 00 00 00 ....

In addition, the cpl.cfg file no longer exists in the system32 folder!

I've tried using the KB search but MS has now integrated their new "bing"
search engine into it, and I'm less than pleased with the results.

Anyone traveled this road before?

Hello Buzz,

Do you talk about TS CALs to the TS LIcensing server or other windows licenses?
If other just disable the license logging service and keep control of your
licenses manual. Just make sure to have the correct amount of licenses available.

Just talking about the normal client licenses, Meinolf, not the TS CALs. I
knew that the licensing scheme didn't function too well and that it was OK
to stop the service, but I was hoping to get the licensing service do the
work of keeping up with how many licenses were being used. Thanks...
