I have a SBS 2003 server, Dell Poweredge. We have 5 external USB hard drives
for backups. When I plug in the hard drive, I would like the server to assign
the letter X: to the drive.

Every time I plug in the drive it wants to take the F:, letter. I have the
F: drive as a network share. I need the F: for some old software they are
running.

I have changed the drive letter, multiple times. I have used USBDeview to
remove the the hard drives from the system. No luck.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried using diskmgmt.msc to change the drive letter?

If this does not work then you can try walking around the problem instead of
resolving it. Presumably you're using some batch file to back up your files.
If so then you could modify it like this:
@echo off
set VolTemp=
set Vol=
for /F %%a in ('mountvol ^| findstr "\\ :\"') do call :Sub %%a
if not [%Vol%]==[] (
mountvol F:\ /d
mountvol X:\ %Vol%
)
rem Your backup commands go here
goto :eof

:Sub
set Line=%1
if %Line:~0,2%==\\ (set VolTemp=%1) else (set Drive=%1)
if [%Drive%]==[F:\] if [%Vol%]==[] set Vol=%VolTemp%

The batch file will detect if drive F: exists. If so then it will change the
drive letter to X:.
Note: Use copy & paste when creating your version of the batch file. Do not
retype the above code.
