Hi All: I was trying to upgrade a 2008 std server to 2008 R2, and ran into
some problems. The server was configured with a mirrored boot partition and
had been running for some time without any problems.

I had selected to update the existing installation, but after rebooting, an
error came up saying that windows couldn't verify the digital signature of
"windows.exe", and when I selected "enter to continue", I was presented with
two boot options "windows" and "windows secondary plex". I couldn't boot
from the first option, but when I selected "secondary plex" the system
booted, and on login there was a message the installation had failed and my
previous system had been restored.

When I check under disk management, I see that the c: mirror status is
"Failed Redundancy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump)" and if I right click on
either disk in the mirror, my only options are to either "remove mirror",
"reactivate volume" or "reactivate disk".

If I check system properties, under "startup and recovery" there's two
options now listed:

"Microsoft Windows Server 2008"

"Microsoft Windows Server 2008 - secondary plex"

So, I'm interested to know what the significance of the boot error is about
the verification error, and why the installation may have failed? Is there
any log I can look at that might shed light on the problem?

Also, it seems like the failed installation is on one disk and the previous
installation is on the "secondary plex". Is there any way to get rid of the
failed install, and then re-bind the mirror without hosing the system
completely?

The version of R2 I used was "Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, Enterprise,
Standard, and Web RC (x64) - DVD (English)
" from MSDN dated 4/20/2009

Looks like this article covers it. See the section;
