To send the commands, you can Telnet to the server on the appropriate
port. For example, you can Telnet to the server on port 25 to issue
SMTP commands. For HTTP, use port 80. For FTP, use port 21.

The best way to find an easy to understand guide is to google for a
write up someone has done with examples on a particular topic.
