I have a Dell PowerEdge 2500 running Windows 2003 Server. After the updates
for KB960225 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=960225) and KB960803
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=960803) were applied, the server becomes
unresponsive during times of high disk and/or network activity. The power is
still on, but the Intranet (IIS) is inaccessible, the server cannot be
pinged, and the monitor does not show any video. When I get into the office
in the morning, I have to hold the power button in order to reboot the
server. Additionally, when Windows is booting up, the progress bar hangs
(stops moving) and the server needs to be powered off and rebooted again. It
hangs on startup about 3 out of 4 times that it is rebooted. We removed the
updates and the nightly crashes and boot hangs stopped. We replaced the
updates and the nightly crashes and boot hangs started again.

There are no messages in the event viewer. The messages just stop at a
certain point in the night and then resume when we reboot the server. The
most common time for the crash is right after a Symantec Live Update when it
tries to push out the updates to the clients. The second most common time is
during a nightly backup of the server. It has crashed once during the day
when an antivirus scan was performed on it, but didn't crash on a subsequent
antivirus scan or disk defragmentation. I've been in contact with Symantec
and they say that they haven't heard of any problems between their products
and the updates. I've run the Dell diagnostics on the hardware and that came
back clean as well.

1. Has anyone heard about similar problems regarding the two Windows updates
mentioned above?
2. Is there anything else I can do to troubleshoot this? Additional log
files somewhere? Monitoring tools I can turn on?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
