Hello saqib,

Didn't you see my reply in:
microsoft.public.windows.activedirectory.dsml

"Without any backup of at least the system state you can not restore anything.
Was the 2000 DC demoted already or is it still existing in the domain?"

And as you said now the old one is demoted and removed from the domain, without
a system state backup you can't restore.

Do you have a system state backup from the 2000 server when it was DC and
how old is this backup?

Best regards

Start by rebooting the sever in the Safe Mode and turn off "Automatically
restart" option on the Startup and Recovery page of System Properties dialog
box (Control Panel). The investigate further by analyzing the crash dump

Hello saqib,

So you can still use the DC or was it shutdown over the tombstone lifetime?
If not and you are sure that the creashed DC will not be repaired or brought
back on any other way, which of course is more or less is not possible except
Marcins suggestion work, you can seize the FSMO roles back to the 2000 DC
and cleanup AD database, AD sites and services according to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555846/en-us

On the DNS zones and server properties make sure the 2008 server entries
are removed and now you can again promote a new server in the domain.

Hi saqib,

Is the Windows 2000 DC still active, or did you take it offline? If offline
(unplugged), how long has it been offline?

Have you considered Meinolf's suggestions to use the old DC bringing it back
up online? That is of course if you haven't demoted it yet, and since it is
Windows 2000, you haven't had it offline more than 60 days.

With the 2000 DC, your AD infrastructure will still be ok, and you can
rebuild the 2008 server.

Ace & Meinolf,

Thanks for the advice I have turned it on back and it is working fine but
now give me the walk through to remove the crash DC from old DC as I have
prepared a new system with 2008 Ent installed on it and I want to make it New
PDC with all master roles.

Thanks

Hello saqib,

Nice to hear that you can do it that way.

Keep in mind you should always have at least 2 DC/DNS/GC per domain for failover
and redundancy reason.

Good to hear that the old machine is working.

Follow the instructions in this link to run a metadata cleanup to remove the
crashed DC.

How to remove data in Active Directory after an unsuccessful domain
controller demotion Windows 2000 and 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

After you go through the process, wait about 30 minutes, then promote the
2008 DC into the domain. I would also suggest to rebuilt the 2008 machine
from scratch prior to adding it back in.

You will have to make it a GC and seize the FSMO roles to the current (old)
DC. See the following to help:

Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controller

Hello saqib,

Follow this way to use ntdsutil, to seize the missing FSMO roles:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504

Applies also to 2008.

Dear Meinoilf and Ace,

Yes I have used Ntdsutil utility and seized the roles of RID master and also
made another DC on new windows server 2008 machine as normal domain
controller as GC now I have to tranfer all the master roles to it.

Thank

Hello saqib,

For all DCs run dcdiag /v and repadmin /showrepl to make sure no errors exist
anymore.

For the user account make sure it is not logging on with a temporary profile
instead of the real one.

If the crashed DC is gone, and it held the FSMO roles, the roles need to be
seized to an existing DC immediately. It's not something that can wait,
unless the current roles are being held by an existing DC.

Dear Ace,

I have seized the roles but the schema master role is unable to be tranfered
yet please check this:-

it_admin>netdom query fsmo
Schema master MPPKWDC.mediaphoneplus.com
Domain naming master mppkw-database.mediaphoneplus.com
PDC mppkw-database.mediaphoneplus.com
RID pool manager mppkw-database.mediaphoneplus.com
Infrastructure master mppkw-database.mediaphoneplus.com
The command completed successfully.

Where MPPKWDC is crashed DC.

I run ntdsutil and tasfer schema master but after 24 hours the same status
iam getting please advice.

Hello saqib,

Make sure to follow exactly this steps to seize the schema master role:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc783650(WS.10).aspx

Keep in mind that the used account must be member of the schema admins.

Hello saqib,

According to this output the schema master role is on the mppkw-database
so on the correct server. Make sure that all DCs replicate correct and have
the same level of information.

Use replmon or repadmin to make this sure.
