I would like to know if there is any documented recommendation from MS on
the number of times you can upgrade a server. I remember reading that its
not advisable to upgrade the Os more than once...like Upgrading 2000 to 2003
and then to 2008 on the same hardware.

Can you provide me what the right recommendation would be and also if you
can give me some supporting link...that wuld be gr8

Regards

Hello Glaw,

You can do inplace upgrades as you like. This is supported. But personal
i don't do an inplace upgrade if the OS version changes, i always do a fresh
install of the new OS machine and add it to the domain.

The only inplace upgrade i did was NT4 to Windows server 2000/2003 and this
only for the preparation of AD and then i removed asap the upgraded machine
form the domain.

At least if the OS architecture has a major change like from NT4 to Windows
server 2000/2003 and from Windows server 2003 to Windows server 2008 i wan't
recommend it even it is fully supported.

Best regards

Sometimes, it's good to get off the junk a machine sees over the years.
May it be updates, log files, installations of applications. You
certainly want to cut a machine and start from scratch sometimes.

DCs are good candidates for this - since they're a distributed system
anyway, introducing a new DC and having it replicate isn't rocket
science and compared to other technologies and servers, pretty easy to
get rolling.

There's no support guideline out there. As updating a server from 2000
to 2003 is supported and updating from 2003 and 2008 is too, I don't see
why inplace updating a machine shouldn't be supported. That doesn't mean
you really should do it. Is that piece of hardware capable of handling
Server 2008 and the workload put on it?

Cheers,
Florian

I understand and i fully support new DC builds than in-place upgrades. While
it is supported by MS, i feel we have better thing to worry about than fire
fighting on something which is unexpecetd when doing an in-place upgrade.

I wanted this info from a documentation perspetive only.

Thanks for all the responses.
