In W2k8, the DFS-R replicates the Sysvol information between DCs. But is that
same mechanism used to replicate the NTDS.Dit file or is it still replacated
as it was in Windows 2003?

Those are two different mechanisms. DFS-R replaces FRS as the file-based
replication mechanism that used to replicate SYSVOL and NETLOGON across
the domain.

Directory Service changes are handled by other services -- it pretty
much involves RPC communication between the DCs in place.

What they have in common though is that they both use the topology
information in AD Sites&Services to calculate least-cost rep between ends.

Cheers,
Florian

Hello TheArchiveMan,

In addition to Florians information you have to keep min mind that not the
NTDS.dit will be replicated itself, the data changes will be replicated,
that also is the reason that not all NTDS.dit files have the same size on
multiple DCs in one domain.

A little more details from technet, if you want to take 30 minutes here is a
more detailed explanation on the replication model.
